What is a Trapped Nerve?

A trapped nerve (also called a pinched nerve) happens when nearby muscles, joints, discs or irritated tissues place too much pressure on a nerve. This pressure disrupts normal nerve function and can lead to symptoms that travel away from where the irritation actually is.

Many people assume the painful area is where the problem starts, but thatโ€™s often not the case. For example, tingling, pain or numbness in your hand can actually come from a nerve being irritated in your neck.

Thatโ€™s why finding the true source of your symptoms is so important. When I assess you, my focus is always on understanding exactly where the irritation is coming from so your treatment is targeted, effective and longโ€‘lasting.

Common Symptoms of a Trapped Nerve

Symptoms vary depending on which nerve is affected but commonly include:

  • Sharp or shooting pain
  • Burning pain
  • Pins and needles
  • Tingling sensations
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pain travelling into the arm or leg
  • Reduced grip strength
  • Difficulty turning your head
  • Pain when sitting, driving or working
  • Symptoms that worsen after prolonged positions

Many people also notice that symptoms fluctuate throughout the day or become worse with stress, poor posture or repetitive activities.

Areas Commonly Affected

I regularly treat patients experiencing symptoms associated with nerve irritation affecting the:

Neck

A trapped or irritated nerve in the neck may cause neck pain, shoulder discomfort, pain travelling down the arm, tingling in the fingers or reduced arm strength.

Lower Back

Nerve irritation in the lower back can cause lower back pain, sciatica, pain travelling down the leg, tingling or numbness extending into the foot.

Shoulder and Arm

Shoulder pain, arm tingling or weakness can sometimes be associated with nerve irritation rather than a problem originating in the shoulder itself. During your assessment, I will work to identify the likely source of your symptoms and recommend an appropriate treatment approach. If your symptoms appear to be related to a shoulder condition, you can also explore my dedicated pages for Shoulder Pain, Shoulder Impingement, Frozen Shoulder or Shoulder Tendinopathy.

Upper Back

Pain, stiffness around the shoulder blades, burning sensations or pain spreading around the chest can sometimes be associated with nerve irritation in the thoracic spine. I will assess your symptoms to help determine the likely cause and identify the most appropriate way to manage them.

What Causes a Trapped Nerve?

A trapped nerve can develop for many different reasons, including:

  • Poor posture
  • Prolonged desk work
  • Muscle tension
  • Joint stiffness
  • Disc bulges or disc irritation
  • Arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Heavy lifting
  • Repetitive movements
  • Pregnancy
  • Stress-related muscle tension
  • Reduced spinal mobility

Often several factors contribute to the problem rather than a single injury.

How I Treat Trapped Nerves at Ellie Physiotherapy & Wellness

My approach to trapped nerve treatment focuses on reducing pressure on the irritated nerve, improving movement and helping the surrounding tissues heal naturally. After a detailed assessment, I tailor your treatment specifically to your symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

Depending on what I find during your assessment, your treatment may include:

  • Handsโ€‘on manual therapy to ease tension around the nerve

  • Joint mobilisation to improve movement and reduce compression

  • Soft tissue massage to calm irritated muscles and improve circulation

  • Nerve gliding exercises to help the nerve move freely again

  • Gentle mobility work to restore comfortable movement

  • Individual rehabilitation programmes designed for your daily activities

  • Postural assessment to identify contributing factors

  • Simple ergonomic tips to help reduce strain during your day
  • Strengthening exercises to support longโ€‘term recovery

  • Education to help prevent future flareโ€‘ups

Every session is completely personalised. I take the time to understand whatโ€™s causing your symptoms, what movements feel difficult, and what you want to get back to doing โ€” then I build your treatment plan around that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a trapped nerve heal without treatment?

Some mild cases improve naturally. However, persistent symptoms, numbness or weakness should always be assessed to identify the underlying cause and prevent long-term irritation.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

Many patients notice improvements within the first few appointments, although recovery depends on the severity of the nerve irritation, your general health and how long you've had symptoms.

Should I keep exercising?

In most cases, gentle movement is beneficial. I'll advise which activities to continue, which to modify and which exercises will help your recovery.

Is a trapped nerve the same as sciatica?

No. Sciatica describes irritation of the sciatic nerve causing symptoms down the leg. A trapped nerve can occur anywhere in the body, including the neck, upper back, shoulder or lower back.

When should I see a physiotherapist?

If your pain, numbness or tingling lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, interferes with work or sleep, or you notice weakness, it's advisable to seek assessment as soon as possible.
