By the end of the first session the intense pain was easing and following a course of treatment with massage, infra red and electrotherapy, combined with a gentle exercise programme, I am now pain free. I returned to Ellie earlier this year with Lower Back pain. She is working her magic again and combined with her Pilates sessions I am feeling so much stronger and better able to avoid further injury. I would highly recommend Ellie Physiotherapy in Didsbury.Posted on Google Bruno RitoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a few sessions with Ellie after getting the biggest back blockage and terrible pain I've ever had in my life, I was astonished by how fast she arranged to see me and the results I got from each sessions. After 4 visits my blockage was history , thanks Ellie!Posted on Google Shireen FelicityTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ellieโs help has been central to my recovery! When I twisted my ankle in December, I had to stop doing all of the activities I enjoyed such as walking, running and hiking. I googled some stretches to do but found there wasnโt much improvement in 3-4 weeks, and I thought I might have to cancel some holidays I have coming up this year. In my first session with Ellie, she took time to really talk to me and get an understanding of my pain, explaining how my injury had affected the different parts of my ankle, and managing my expectations regarding my immediate and long term recovery which was more helpful than just googling my symptoms. Ellieโs guidance on how to gently build up my strength through targeted exercises that I could do between sessions, as well as physical therapies like massages and ultrasound treatment (which is amazing!) have made my ankle feel just like it did before! Her clinic is well situated in Didsbury, being easy to access by bus, tram or car, and she is so kind and caring, really supporting me through my recovery, both physically, but also mentally understanding how to tailor my return to my usual activities to avoid reinjury. I couldnโt recommend her enough.Posted on Google Francesca BryanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just want to say a HUGE thank you to Ellie for helping to sort my sciatic and arm strain problems. On a personal level, Ellie is such a lovely and thoughtful person who showed she was genuinely interested in me by taking the time to talk things through with me and show me what I needed to do to improve things. Each of my 3 visits showed me what a caring, intelligent, and truly wonderful person. On a professional level, Ellie knows her stuff and with her guidance and treatment suggestions, I feel I am well on the way to recovery and given that I was struggling to exercise, walk and sleep due to the pain the progress made has been amazing. I have a further and last visit soon and although I am supremely happy with the outcome, I will miss my appointments with Ellie. However at least I now know where to go on anything Physiotherapy related and won't hesitate to contact Ellie as and when that happens. Thank you Ellie. You are an angel!Posted on Google Ash HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ellie is the best! I can't recommend Ellie Physiotherapy & Wellness highly enough. I came to Ellie with persistent lower back pain caused by a herniated disc that was aggravating my sciatic nerve. From the very first session, Ellie took the time to thoroughly assess my condition, explain what was going on in a way I could actually understand, and map out a tailored treatment strategy that made all the difference. The therapies she used on site were incredibly effective โ a mix of hands-on treatment and guided exercises that targeted the source of the problem rather than just masking the symptoms. She also provided clear, practical advice on how to manage and improve my condition between sessions, which really helped me take control of my recovery. What sets Ellie apart is not just her clinical expertise but her fantastic interpersonal skills. She has a warm, approachable manner and genuinely cares about her clientsโ wellbeing. She remembered details from our previous sessions, always followed up on how I was doing, and created an environment where I felt listened to and supported. Thanks to Ellie, Iโm finally seeing real progress with my back and feel more confident in managing my physical health long term. If you're struggling with pain or injury, don't hesitate to get in touch with her โ she's outstanding.Posted on Google FahidTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I'm Ellie, a physiotherapist with a passion for helping people get back to doing the things they enjoy without pain. Whether your shoulder pain has come on gradually, started after an injury, or is affecting your work, sport, or everyday life, my aim is to understand exactly what's causing it and create a rehabilitation plan that works for you.I don't believe in quick fixes or handing out the same exercise sheet to everyone. Every shoulder is different, and every treatment plan should be too.
What Is Shoulder Impingement?
Despite the name, shoulder impingement isn't always about something being "trapped" or "pinched."Current research tells us that shoulder pain is usually more complex than that. It often develops because the tendons, muscles, or other soft tissues around the shoulder become irritated when they're overloaded or not working as efficiently as they could. That's why I don't simply treat the painful area. During your assessment, I'll look at how your shoulder moves, how strong it is, how your shoulder blade functions, and whether there are any other factors contributing to your symptoms.Treating the underlying cause gives you the best chance of long-term recovery rather than temporary relief.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
During your impingement assessment, I look closely at how your shoulder moves โ especially overhead โ to identify where the tendons or bursa are being irritated. I assess strength, posture and movement patterns to understand whatโs contributing to the โpinchingโ sensation.Treatment may include handsโon techniques to reduce irritation and improve movement. I show you how to adjust certain activities or gym exercises to avoid aggravation, and I design a strengthening programme to help your shoulder move more freely and comfortably.Youโll leave with clear guidance on what movements to modify, what exercises to begin and how to progress safely.

Common Symptoms
You may have shoulder impingement if you experience:
Pain when reaching overhead
Pain lifting objects
Pain putting on clothing
Pain washing your hair
Difficulty sleeping on the affected side
Weakness during lifting
Sharp pain reaching behind your back
Pain during gym exercises such as shoulder press or bench press
Clicking or catching sensations
Reduced shoulder movement
Symptoms often develop gradually but can also occur after injury.
What Causes Shoulder Impingement?
Many different factors can contribute to shoulder pain.
Common causes include:
Repetitive Overhead Activities
Painting, decorating, warehouse work, manual labour and certain sports place repeated stress on the shoulder.
Poor Shoulder Strength
Weakness in the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles can reduce shoulder stability.
Sports Injuries
Swimming, tennis, CrossFit, rugby, cricket, volleyball and weightlifting commonly overload the shoulder.
Poor Posture
Long hours sitting at a desk can contribute to altered shoulder mechanics
.Previous Shoulder Injury
Previous dislocations, fractures or rotator cuff injuries can increase the likelihood of persistent shoulder pain.
Age-Related Changes
Natural tendon changes may make the shoulder more sensitive to increased activity.
Shoulder Impingement Exercises
Exercises are often the cornerstone of recovery.
Depending on your assessment, your programme may include:
Rotator cuff strengthening
Shoulder blade control exercises
Mobility exercises
Resistance band work
Progressive loading
Functional strengthening
Return-to-sport drills
Your programme is progressed as your shoulder improves.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
Recovery varies depending on:
Severity of symptoms
Duration of pain
Activity levels
Previous injuries
Commitment to rehabilitation
Many patients begin noticing improvements within several weeks, while longer-standing cases may require a more extended rehabilitation programme.
Consistency is the biggest predictor of success.
Can Shoulder Impingement Heal Without Surgery?
In many cases, yes.
Research shows that most people improve with structured physiotherapy and progressive exercise.
Surgery is generally only considered when:
Significant structural damage exists
Conservative treatment has failed
Symptoms remain severe despite rehabilitation
Our aim is always to help you recover using the least invasive treatment possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is shoulder impingement permanent?
No. Most people recover well with the right rehabilitation programme.
Should I stop exercising?
Not necessarily. Complete rest is rarely helpful. I can guide you on how to modify your activities so your shoulder can settle while you stay active.
Can I still go to the gym?
In most cases, yes. Many exercises can be adapted to reduce irritation while maintaining your overall fitness.
Does shoulder impingement show on an MRI?
Not always. Imaging findings donโt always correlate with pain, which is why a thorough clinical assessment is essential.
Will massage fix shoulder impingement?
Massage may provide shortโterm relief, but longerโterm improvement usually comes from addressing strength, movement, and load tolerance.
Is shoulder impingement the same as a rotator cuff tear?
No. They can produce similar symptoms, but they are different conditions and require proper assessment to distinguish.
When Should You See a Physiotherapist?
Seek professional advice if:
Pain lasts more than two weeks
Shoulder pain affects your sleep
You struggle to lift your arm comfortably
Symptoms keep returning
Pain limits work, sport, or daily activities
Home exercises arenโt helping
Early assessment often leads to better outcomes.
