What can Physiotherapy treat?

Physical therapist are experts in assessing and treating musculoskeletal impairments.

Our Chartered Physiotherapist at Ellie Physiotherapy & Wellness can help you with issues involving muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, nerves, and bones.

What is Physiotherapy ?

Physiotherapy focuses on restoring physical function and mobility through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and other modalities. It aims to address underlying musculoskeletal issues, improve flexibility, and enhance strength and endurance.

The overall goal of Physiotherapy is to help individuals of all ages improve their movement, function, independence, and well-being through various techniques and interventions. Physiotherapists use their knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose, and treat a range of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.

Physiotherapy is also beneficial for athletes looking to prevent injuries and enhance performance. Physiotherapists can assess movement patterns, identify potential weaknesses or imbalances, and develop customized programs to optimize performance and reduce the risk of injury.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort related to a musculoskeletal condition, such as sprains, strains, or joint dysfunction, physiotherapy can help alleviate symptoms and promote healing. It is also recommended for individuals recovering from surgery, as physiotherapy can aid in restoring mobility, reducing swelling, and preventing complications.

Following assessment and examination to determine the cause of your pain, our Physiotherapist will devise a treatment plan which will be discussed with you.

Common techniques our physiotherapist may provide are:

manual therapy(mobilisation, spinal manipulation or soft tissue techniques(for example massage))This technique is very effective to help relieve pain, stiffness, inflammation, and swelling. It can also improve circulation, fluid drainage and tissue healing.

Patient education regarding how to prevent or manage pain and  how to correctly perform exercises and activities safely.

Prescribe and supervise specific exercises that aim to improve strength, balance, coordination and endurance.

Our Physiotherapist will work closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that may include stretching, strengthening, balance exercises, functional activities and sports specific training, as well as modalities like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, red light, and hot or cold therapy.

If the problem is severe ,our Physiotherapist may refer you for an MRI scan to identify the cause of your problem and will be able to advice you whether a referral to a Specialist is required.

What to expect during a first -time Physiotherapy session?

In your very first session we will ask various questions to help ascertain what your issue
may be in order to understand your current condition. You may be asked about your
medical history and any ongoing medical conditions.

Your Physiotherapist will perform a full physical examination to establish what level of
function you have. Your MSK specialist will test specific anatomic structures which could
be contributing to your symptoms and may involve provoking pain which is normal and
commonly expected side effect of an assessment.

Finally, the Physio will take time to explain your condition, the affected structures;
we will find your goals and help you to achieve it by developing individual treatment

Very few issues are resolved in just one session, therefore we offer :

ongoing care plan(follow up treatments) to ensure correct progress is being made.

Once a patient has completed a course of treatment and recovered they are always given advice and exercises to minimise the chance of recurrence.

Do I have to undress for Physio?

The Therapist will often need to look at the area concerned and with your consent; you
may be asked to remove some clothing. If for personal or religious reasons you are unhappy
to undress then please inform your Physiotherapist.
We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed with us.

What to wear?

We recommend that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will allow us to easily
see the skin, joints and muscles around your injury.
